And not all players provide the same features for viewing and converting. The problem is that the codec will often only work with a proprietary video player.
IMM5 CODEC DOWNLOAD VLC HOW TO
It might not be obvious how to use it, but if the video needs it, they generally give it to you. Generally a CD from court generated by a police department, for example, will have the necessary codec on the disc. In fact, without the right codec installed, your video is 100% useless.

(In fact, if you know if one, please contact me!) And if the codec isn’t installed, or if the video player you’re using doesn’t have access to the codec, you can’t view your video. To this day I haven’t found an IMM5 codec that works on Mac OS X. Others, like the IMM5, are proprietary and very hard to find. Many codecs are quite common and come preinstalled on your computer, smartphone or tablet. You can read all the gory details about what a codec is over at Wikipedia, but what it boils down to is, it’s a special process of creating a video and once created via that process, to view the video, the video player must have access to the codec that created it.

But what does that mean? What is a codec anyway? For example, several police departments here in Massachusetts where I practice use systems that produce their video with the IMM5 codec.

If you’ve tinkered with converting videos you receive from the government, opposing counsel, police departments, or private surveillance systems, you’ve no doubt been faced with installing codecs.
